new, new, new

So I began my second semester this week. In nursing school they tell you if you make it through the first semester the rest is "easier". I don't know about all that. I'm only 4 days in and I'm already behind about 300 pgs. of reading. But today and tomorrow should be proficient to catch up.

Along with he new material and new classes we also have new clinical rotations. This semester we have our Geriatric,
Pediatric, and OB rotations. The old, the young, and the brand new.. there are no words to describe how excited I am about Pediatrics. Just seeing their little faces make me want to work my ass off to know my material well so I can help. Next Wednesday my professor chose me to do my rounds in the Pediatric ER. I almost shit myself when he handed my my assignment.

Everything is new. Last semester we were on 4 South at UMC, which is the older portion of the hospital, so it was usually patients who didn't have insurance, were low income, or no income, or were victims of gun shot wounds or stabbings that would end up on our floor. All the equipment and supplies were sparse, and what we did have was usually broken. We had to learn to improvise, or "make it work" as Tim Gunn would say. This semester I have two rotations one at Sunrise Children's Hospital, which is one of the best children's facilities on the west coast and the other rotation I'm at the 1500 building at UMC, which is a new wing that has private suite rooms. Both of these facilities have the most innovative technology in the health care field. Today and yesterday we had our orientation and had the tour of the floor, and I will admit I was seduced by the new and clean and fanciness of it all. But the more I think about it I realize to be a truly great nurse you have to work well in any condition. I want to eventually work with Dr. w/out Borders in underdeveloped areas, I'm sure it will be more "4 South" style. Lets face it, I'm a more "4 South" kind of girl. Either way I'm grateful for both experiences.

Good Day my Friends.
